Preparation of raw materials for making menthol

Menthol is usually produced from the stems and leaves of the mint plant. However, if you make it yourself at home, you should choose the leaf part because this is the part that contains the most essential oils. You choose dark green, glossy leaves, the petioles are slightly wilted yellow as possible. It is recommended to harvest the leaves at the time when the plant begins to bud before blooming because this is the time when the essential oil content is highest in the leaves.

Mint leaves after harvesting are washed, spread in thin layers and dried in a shady place to wilt the leaves. It is not recommended to expose the leaves in places with intense sunlight because essential oils can evaporate. When drying, pay attention to spread in thin layers evenly, do not pile because it may cause the leaves to be crushed and damaged.

How to make menthol at home simply

There are many ways to extract menthol such as: cold pressing, steam distillation, using CO2 gas,… However, if you do it at home, then simpler and easier methods should be applied.

Making menthol at home by distillation

  • Step 1: Prepare raw materials and distillation tools including: distillation pots, cooling tanks, catchers and mint leaves.
  • Step 2: Put the mint leaves in a distiller, put the leaves on the top and do not let the water underneath stick.

  • Step 3: Cover tightly, bring to a boil, turn to a simmer. The essential oil vapor from the pot will pass through the pipe to the refrigeration tank and condense in liquid form. Use the catcher to let the essential oil flow in, you can get a bottle of menthol.

During the distillation process, some of the water vapor rises, condensing in the refrigeration tank mixed with essential oils. However, because the essential oil is lighter, it will float to the top, the water below. You can drain it slowly to get essential oils out of the water more easily!

Make menthol by soaking with alcohol

Making menthol by soaking wine sounds new but is extremely effective. You just need to prepare a clean glass jar with a lid, 300ml of white wine at 45 to 50 degrees, 300gr of mint leaves and a clean cloth. The way to extract menthol is as follows:

  • Step 1: Mint leaves are washed, spread evenly in thin layers and then dried in a dry place, protected from direct sunlight for 1 to 2 days.
  • Step 2: Take chopped dried mint leaves, then use a puree mortar to obtain more essential oil.
  • Step 3: Put mint leaves in a glass jar, fill 300ml with alcohol, stir well and cover tightly. Store glass jars in a dry place, away from further sunlight because essential oils may evaporate.

  • Step 4: Soak mint leaves in alcohol for about 4 weeks, then open the lid of the jar, filter the pulp with a cloth, the more thoroughly filtered the essential oil will be obtained. At intervals, every day it is recommended to shake the mint jar well 2 times so that the crystals are released from the leaves.
  • Step 5: Add the filtered pure menthol to another glass jar to preserve and use gradually.

Should you buy essential oils or make your own
